Field Problem: TRICARE Standard vs. Prime

Dear, Field Problems:

My husband left for basic Feb. 3, and of course, all of this is new to me. What do you think of the insurance? I know there is standard and prime. What are the differences, and which is better?

Heaven, Army spouse

Dear, Heaven:

Thank you for writing to us with your question about TRICARE plans.

TRICARE (along with a lot of other information about Army life) can be confusing, I know. Fortunately, we have some great resources for you to use to get the information that you need, and I’m going to include some new Army spouse information too.

First, check out the Plan Finder on the TRICARE website. It’s a great tool for figuring out what’s best for you. Prime is great because there are no co-pays (unless you fill prescriptions at a network pharmacy, though cost is much lower than many other insurance providers). TRICARE Select often gives you more options for places of care, but there are co-pays. You’ll have to decide which works for you. Check out the TRICARE Plan Finder here. Answer the questions to help you make an informed decision.Note that you might be offered another option: The US Family Health Plan. This is offered in select locations and gives you civilian providers like Select, but at Prime costs.

You might also find the TRICARE Compare Plans page helpful. We went ahead and entered Prime, Prime Remote, and Select, but you can change it up if you like.

We want to wish you a warm welcome to this new Army life. You’re always welcome to hang out with us and our awesome followers on our Facebook page or search Army Wife Network on Instagram, Twitter, and Pinterest. Can also visit search Army Wife Talk Radio on your favorite podcast app and listen to us when you’re on the go!
