Cake in a Jar

If you haven’t already heard of this awesome care package item, you’re about to stumble upon something awesome!!! I recently made this for my husband who is currently in Iraq. These are GREAT and just something that’s homemade to include in a care package.

Blog3It’s basically a mini cake inside of a mason jar. It arrives moist and fresh and tasty! (Did I mention it’s homemade??)

Here’s how to make them:

Get wide-mouth canning jars. You can find them at Walmart, other stores, or online. Boil the jars to sterilize.

1 package of cake mix or any cake recipe

1. Make the cake batter according to the instructions or recipe
2. Grease the jar by liberally spraying the inside with cooking spray
3. Fill jar no more than 1/2 way with batter
4. Place jars on cookie sheet on rack in the oven. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean @ 400 degrees
5. While baking, boil jar lids in a pan of water
6. When cake is done, take on jar out at a time and cover with hot lid. Screw on jar ring tightening it slightly
7. The lid will seal as it cools. Listen to hear the “ping” as they seal.
8. As the cake cools, it will pull away from the jar slightly. That’s ok, it just means that it will slide out of the jar easily.
9. DO NOT FROST cake in the jar! Send frosting along.
10. Make sure you wrap the jars well (bubble wrap is preferable, but wadded newspaper or clothing and other items will pad it too)

Don’t forget to include a couple of plastic knives for the frosting and some plastic forks.

Some guys will even ask “How did you get the cake in there?” Ha ha ha. Just tell the the truth…MAGIC!

    be carefull closing the lid right after baking. can cause high water levels which are a perfect breeding spot for bacteria.

    Here is another good site talking about proper sterilization of jars and lids and optimum storage temperatures for your canned goods.

    Admittedly, I’m not a canner. I also don’t want to take a chance on the health of those I’m sending these cakes too, so I did have to consult my mother –someone who grew up learning canning, canned when I grew up, and a nurse who has called in her questions to the county extension office a few times regarding similar issues.

    Mom says, “I think the cake in a jar is safe for short term storage to send off to a soldier overseas, but hopefully they aren’t being stored for years. They would fall under low acid food canning rules.

    If the seal is good and the cake cooked right, it is unlikely someone will get sick.

    You may want to try your local extension office for additional information or state office.”

    Food safety is a concern, so if you’re not comfortable that you understand these instructions and the risk, then yes! there is always the “” option.

    I’ve used both and have had good reports without incident.

    We’ve had reports back that this has been done with pumpkin bread, and if you google there are more recipes out there. I would guess that any breads that are cake-like i.e. not traditional yeast based breads would follow the same directions. Good luck!

    I send cake in jar to soliders all the time and they leave jars there for cups.

    I followed the directions just like above sent them to my son overseas for his birthday and he said they smelled like mold and didn’t taste too good. But mind you I sent brownies like this to him and they tasted just fine. What went wrong with the cake?

    How long do these normally last when sealed correctly? My bf is in Italy and may or may not be on a short training deployment when it arrives to his base. He’ll only have a few days left but it’s about three weeks altogether

    Canned cake is delicious, but please don’t mail it without refrigeration

    Here is a warning from the National Center for Home Food Preservation:

    Can I can cake or bread?
    These products are not recommended for canning; choose recipes that you can freeze. In fact, most of these products are not really “canned.” The directions call for baking in the jar and then closing with a canning lid. Many recipes for quick breads and cakes are low-acid and have the potential for supporting the growth of a bacteria like Clostridium botulinum if it is present inside the closed jar. One university’s research showed a high potential for problems. You will see these products made commercially; however, additives, preservatives and processing controls not available for home recipes are used. Canning jar manufacturers also don’t endorse baking in their canning jars.

    Canned cake should be kept refrigerated.
