Expect the Unexpected

Life is funny sometimes. You assume one thing and end up with something entirely unexpected.

You would think after being a military spouse for more than eight years and dealing with the military for close to 11 years, I would know better than to think that things would ever go the way I expected they would.

About a month and a half ago, my husband called me to say he didn’t have an assignment at Fort Lewis once he left Korea. Needless to say, I was shocked. I certainly wasn’t expecting to move once he returned. In fact, I thought we would be here for a couple more years at the very least.

But, as usual, the military threw us a curve ball.

We are now getting ready to head to an Air Force base in the midwest. I’m sure it’s going to be very different, but I’m sure it will also be interesting.

I have some trepidation about moving, too. I’ve been on the west coast for so long that it almost seems foreign to be anywhere else. Starting over again is always a challenge. You have to learn about the new place you’re living and hope you find some of the comforts you had in the old place. You meet new people, and the culture of where you are living changes. It will definitely be a change going from a very laid back, almost hipster-like culture to small town middle America.

Despite some of my initial anxiety about moving, I’m also excited.

We will be just about six hours away from our family, and that is something that hasn’t happened ever. Being able to be near them, especially now that we have a baby, is great because we’ll be able to visit more than once a year. (I don’t exaggerate that either. The cost of plane tickets is crazy. Add two cats into that and it can get very expensive very easily.)

Now that we’re moving, I’m trying to get on the PCS preparation train and get our house and selves ready for the move. Even having movers packing us up, it’s still an undertaking to prepare to leave some place you have been for so long. Not just getting ready to move, but also doing all the things you might be putting off, like going to a museum or eating at a restaurant you’ve wanted to try. I definitely have some things to check off my to-do list!

Though it will be a little scary to move, it’s also exciting. I have a lot to do in the next few months. Wish me luck!
