I was wondering how PCSing with pets works. My husband and I are really wanting to get a puppy, but we are moving to Oklahoma at the end of the year.

Thank you for writing to us with your question about PCSing with pets. It certainly has the potential to add a new level of chaos to PCSing (which we all know has its own chaos without any extra help).

So let’s start with the easy stuff first. I don’t know how experienced you are with PCSing in general, so I’ll include our super helpful Army Wife Network PCS Guide for you. Whether it’s your first PCS or you’re an old pro, it’s a great go-to source for all of the information that you’ll need to ensure a smooth transition.

You mentioned Oklahoma, so I’ll assume you’re going to Fort Sill. If you want to check out what the pet rules and regs are at that installation, here is the Fort Sill Veterinary Treatment Facility page. Quick side note: receiving care at the installation VTFs is often easier on the wallet than civilian providers. If you decide to live on the installation, can contact Corvias using the number on their website.

As far as the actual move, if you’re driving you’ll need to figure out where to stay. You might want to check out the La Quinta Military Rewards program. La Quinta has a free pet policy and offers a military discount. If that’s not for you, try the Bring Fido travel site, which often has great connections finding pet-friendly lodging while on the road.

There are some pet-shipping services out there too.

If you go overseas in the future, note that you can still take your pet with you, often with small animals flying in-cabin and larger animals as cargo. There are many regulations for this process, so use your local VTF to receive the best information for where you’re going. The cost will also be much cheaper this way.
