Volunteering-Giving and Receiving

Postby Kowanda » Mon Nov 16, 2009 11:07 pm

I took some time to reflect on volunteering. I googled volunteering and read a couple of articles. The main thems were sense of satisfaction and doing good for others, connecting with community and the idea of what it would be like if people didn't volunteer.

I have to say, I like the feeling of satisfaction after I've volunteered. I get the biggest satisfaction when I've done something with kids (coaching kids sport) or something that makes a difference in our lives (Army Family Action Plan).

I like to volunteer when we move to a new post so I can start meeting people. People who often have the same interests as I do. Helps me adjust to the new place. Also, helps me to get into a routine.

I'm not so much a fan on long term postions. Like the FRG. But, I volunteer anyway. Of course, it's usually when no one else wants the job either. But, I see the value in helping out. So, I take on the 'job'.

What would life be like it people didn't volunteer? How many lives would be untouched? How lonely would we be?
