Recon Rendezvous: A Little Milspouse Fun

Welcome to AWN’s Monthly Recon Rendezvous! We’re so glad you’re here. As the name implies, Recon Rendezvous is a place of community and connection. It’s an opportunity to explore and learn about our fellow military supporters’ lives, victories, trials, and experiences.

Each month, we “rendezvous” here to provide information, resources, and encouragement. Thanks for contributing to the interactive empowerment of military spouses around the globe!

For many years, people have gravitated toward me for advice or life-coaching conversations since I’m a certified life coach. I’m grateful to share my thoughts and personal experiences on a variety of topics such as being a milspouse, parenting, fitness/weight loss, writing, and faith.

However, I’ve never had anyone come up to me and say, “Hey, Sharita… I need some advice on how to have more fun in my life. Can you help me out?”

I’m not a fun-hater at all, but I have fun in a self-proclaimed nerdy kind of way. Like the other day was super crazy fun for me because an American flag print three-ring binder cover I ordered arrived in the mail and I got to put together our PCS binder. I also enjoy creating flip charts with smelly markers and shopping for office supplies.

Fun for me but probably not for the 98% of normal people out there.

As you might have noticed last month, we’re doing a miniseries about what “having fun” looks like for our milspouse community. Many of the ideas from our fans were just too good not to share, so here’s the second installment of all things fun-loving!

We asked, “What do you do for fun?” and our followers said this:

“For fun, we’re all about card games, board games, and old Nintendo gaming. Also, we love reading—all kinds of reading: alone, with my husband, aloud, silently, to/with kids, for work, for learning, all kinds of reading! I also love coloring, cooking, listening to music, working out, going to the beach, traveling—any kind of traveling, big or small. Finally, it’s so fun for me to watch my favorite shows and spend time hanging out with friends and family.” — Angie A.

“I have a dance party with my children almost daily! We love exploring Korea when the weather is tolerable and play lots of board games during the winter. We enjoy getting together with other families or even having a friend over for an hour.” —Joy H.

“We’ve been taking our girls to watch the local hockey team play. It is so fun, super cheap, and they’re developing a love for the sport.” — Nicole F.

I craft—sometimes with my boys and sometimes solo. We also like exploring the local area and going camping.” — Mindy K.

“I enjoy hiking, glass fusing, and making blanket forts. (Don’t judge.)” — Heather K.L.E.

“I paint with my girls. They free style and I watch the Art Sherpa on YouTube. Also… kickboxing!” — Marjorie G.

“I play board games with family and watch Netflix.” — Nycole G.U.

“I like to craft and decorate my happy planner!” — Amber C.B.

“I read and/or craft. I also love making care packages that are all about that month’s holidays.” — Kimberly W.

Crafting is so fun for me! I do embroidery, vinyl, and sewing.” — Lanitha W.

“I love road trips!” — Nicholiana G.

“We keep it simple but fun with dinner & movies!”  — Christi J.

Pretty fun ideas, right? We want to make sure we’ve shared as many fun-loving ideas as possible, so if you see something missing from our list, leave a comment with your fun ideas below. As always, thanks for stopping by, and tune in again next month for more insight from our AWN followers.

Sharita Knobloch

Sharita Knobloch has been married to her beloved infantryman husband Brandon for just shy of a decade. The joys and challenges of #ArmyWifeLife ignited her faith on a deep level, so she answered the call to ministry in July 2011. Soon after, Sharita received her Master’s Degree in Christian Leadership from Liberty University. She is currently in pursuit of her EdD in Educational Counseling with an emphasis in Pastoral Counseling, also from Liberty University. Sharita is not only an Army Wife, but is also a Tiny Human mama of two kiddos, a 6-year-old girl and a 2.5-year old boy. She is also a smallish-dog-owner, aspiring-runner, writer, speaker, and spiritual leadership coach. The Knobloch family believes that it is a great privilege to watch God work as they minister in their Army community, regardless of zip code or time zone. She has been serving with AWN in some capacity since February 2014 when she published her first blog for AWN, and has recently transitioned into the role of AWN Owner & Commander. Sharita gets way too excited about office supplies and journal shopping. She is a certified auctioneer, wore duct tape to senior prom (for a scholarship contest #DontJudge), loves napping, fitness, reading for fun, and cheering others on as they strive to reach their goals. Sharita overuses #Hashtags on a regular basis with #NoShame and frequently uses #America! as a verb.
