The Secret Life of Boot Snakes

From an outside view, it’s sometimes easy to look upon our service members in a strictly matter-of-fact, all-business-all-the-time fashion. I know that I myself find so many aspects of military culture intimidating at times. However, today I’m sharing a sneak peek into the secret behind-the-scenes life of our military family. Everything is not so serious all of the time. Thank goodness! Today, I bring you The Secret Life of Boot Snakes!

Boot snakes are very dangerous predators. Their prey being none other than my field-trained, Army-strong, security-clearance-holding soldier. The boot snakes are not deterred by his uniform or credentials. Quite the opposite, they’re ready for attack—on a daily basis!

I rarely witness these sneaky boot snakes coming after my man because, as it turns out, they lie in wait until I’ve vacated our home each day to head off for my own treacherous day of office expeditions.

Never fear, my husband isn’t without protection from these perilous creatures. Without fail, our beloved little Matthews, kitty extraordinaire, comes to his rescue whenever the boot snakes do appear.

Swatting, nails extended, arching with stupendous agility for his age, Matthews instills pure fear into the dark hearts of these vile serpents.

Slithering away in shame, having been bested by a lovable domestic house cat, the boot snakes vow to try again tomorrow.

As for me, I’m thankful for Matthews and the protection and humor he’s brought to my husband and me through this little game.

I’m also so thankful that, one unsuspecting day, at the perfectly right time, I caught them in action.

I’m beyond grateful that even though my husband holds the immense responsibility of a U.S. Army soldier, he’s my favorite person to remind me that everything is not so serious all the time. Believe me, I need the reminder.

What are some of your favorite military family behind-the-scenes secrets? Does your family have any fun-and-games habits to add into mundane daily routines, like getting dressed for work or school?
